Sol*Saver Water Pasteurizer

  The Sol*Saver unit has been designed to reach the temperature
of 150°F /66°C in sunny conditions in about two hours. Built with
aluminum, stainless steel and tempered glass, the unit is rugged and
easily transportable. (24"x23"X5.5" or 58.5 cm x 61 cm x 14 cm)

Microbiological research has proven that bacteria and viruses can be
destroyed by heating drinking water up to 150°F/66°C. , the point at
which pasteurization occurs, making the water safe to drink. Solar
pasteurization kills the pathogens and makes the water safe to drink,
but does not address turbidity or taste of the solar pasteurized


Advanced Solar Water Pasteurization

 Eight stainless steel bottles (22oz/650ml) are filled with water, closed, and snapped into the unit. Sealed with a transparent lid, the unit is put in the sun until the built in thermal indicators record that pasteurization temperature has been reached.


  These thermal indicators (similar to a thermometer) made out of glass are the most important components to make sure that the water has been pasteurized and is safe to drink. Do NOT drink the water if the thermal indicator under the bottle has not changed by reaching 150°F /66°C and achieving pasteurization.


  Once finished, the stainless steel bottles (themselves disinfected in the process) are allowed to cool and will provide long-term sanitary storage of the disinfected drinking water.


 Using drinking water out of the stainless steel bottles avoids the potential for recontamination, often a risk encountered with batch type solar pasteurizers.


On sunny days, several heating cycles can be achieved, providing a multi-day store of reusable, durable and easily transported water bottles.

A Honolulu man who developed a solar cooker is now using one of his latest inventions to help the people of Haiti for one of the essentials they desperately need: water.


Inventor John Grandinetti lives in Kahala. His solar pasteurization unit can help clean bacteria- and virus-tainted water.


The water sits in a black aluminum case and the sun heats the water as high as 180 degrees. A wax indicator melts when the water has been hot enough to kill things like cholera, leptospirosis and other pathogens.


"We feel solar energy offers the greatest possible improvement in their island existence because it will reduce deforestation and improve their health because they'll be able to afford to boil water or pasteurize water using our unit," Grandinetti said.


The Kahala resident is shipping 450 of the units to Haiti. Getting them there is a bit complicated.


"We were lucky enough to be at the moment of completion of our first production of these pasteurizers in china and connected with the right people in Florida, who were incorporating private boats to bring supplies to Haiti with shallow water ports, where we're sending these," Grandinetti said.


He also builds SOLAR COOKERS. He sent a few of those to Haiti, too. He said he is not in this for publicity or money. His organization is not-for-profit.


Grandinetti said he hopes people in Third World countries will use more solar ovens and WATER PASTEURIZERS and cut down fewer trees for firewood.
